If I could spend all weekend watching the sun set in the backyard, I would be happy.
1. Dang! I lost a follower! Is my blog going downhill? Are you all going to leave? I'm feeling all self-concious.
2. I saw an agent yesterday ask a question on twitter and then complain about the answers she received. Hello dummy! You're the one who asked! I stopped following her. She sometimes posted mean things about the queries she received, too.
After I dumped her, I felt empowered. That's right, I said to myself, just because you're a big agent and hold the strings to the publishing world does NOT mean I have to be your follower / friend / buddy or even like you. So there!
3. Now though, I'm wondering if I lost my follower because I created a negative karmic balance in my social media force. :)
4. Fun weekend planned! Tonight, volleyball with a bunch of friends. Tomorrow, mushroom hunting in the mountains. Sunday, soccer!

First of all, banish the self-doubt! The fact that you're not hearing from your publisher has nothing to do with you, you said yourself this was happening to the other authors, too.
ReplyDeleteI read on somebody's blog that there's a limit on the number of blogs we can follow. I had no idea. So I don't think losing a follower has anything to do with your blog (which is NOT going downhill), but probably just means someone hit the limit and had to trim their list. Sorry though, it's still a bummer.
Have a great weekend, Amy!
I loved this post! And why do agents have to be so snarky sometimes? Because they hold all the power? I don't know, but yes it bothers me when I see it and good for you for the unfollow! As for losing a follower, omigosh I feel the same when it happens (on my blog I could care less on twitter lol) and I always wonder why? Maybe because we're so invested in our blogs, plus being writers it's our WRITING and it's like one more rejection. But hey, we should be used to that right?
ReplyDeleteI think there should be an exit interview whenever you want to unfollow someone, where you are forced to give a reason why your departing. "Uh....cause I hit the wrong button." :)
ReplyDeleteMeh. I'm convinced that neither Blogger, Facebook or Twitter really have a good count of how many followers I have. The numbers change in weird ways on me all the time.
ReplyDeleteWe still love you!
I don't even do the stat tracking or following anymore, it's very freeing.
ReplyDeleteI used to freak out if I saw Harper Collins on my hit page. And I dumped a bunch of agents on Twitter, also. Sometimes they can be very snarky and it started to feel like High School.
Once I concentrated on my writing and less on the whole internet world, I was more focused. I wish your editor would tell you what's going on. That has to be frustrating.
Susan, I do understand about hitting a blog limit. It's hard to keep up with a lot of them.
ReplyDeleteKarenG, I guess we should be used to that, but rejection still hurts, doesn't it? :( At least we have cupcakes.
DL, that is a fanTASTIC idea!!! Can you get started on that? ;)
Miriam, I do see that happen with my facebook numbers all the time. But usually my followers stay pretty stable. Thanks--I still love you guys too.
Steph, high school--yes!! I think you're right on about freeing myself. It's something I've been toying with for a couple weeks. I've been having so much trouble getting started on something new--partly because I keep editing myself before I get started: this agent said that's overdone, this other agent said she needs more of whatever. I'm totally stymied. Maybe cutting myself off and writing blind is the way to go. That's what I did with my other books and even if they aren't published at least they were fun to write.
Amy--I saw an agent I thought I admired use the F word on twitter...I was so shocked! I took her off my tbq list...No reason for bad language...In private that's fine, but you are in public on twitter...
ReplyDeleteDon't worry about the missing follower...He or she didn't have the good sense to stick around that's his/her problem...They are missing out on AWESOME you!
Hugs!
HAPPY THOUGHTS FOR YOUR BOOK!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog :D
Hope the rest of your weekend is great with GOOD weather :)
Sharon, I have been surprised at some of the things I've seen agents say. Bad words don't bother me, but the way they make fun of queries they've received really irks me. I'm not talking about the queries filled with glitter which are clearly inappropriate. I mean the ones where an author misspells something and the agent slams them for it. It's really ugly.
ReplyDeleteThanks Rebecca! The weekend is going really well, except that it's almost over! :)
